About the Program

Educating Tomorrow's
Investment Professionals

The South Hill Fund is Ithaca College's premier student investment program — providing real capital, real decisions, and real consequences in a structured academic environment.

Learning by Doing

The Ithaca College South Hill Fund is an umbrella fund comprised of three sub-funds: an equity portfolio managed through the Equity Analysis (FINA 38000) and Equity Portfolio Management (FINA 38500) courses, a fixed income portfolio managed through the Fixed Income Analysis (FINA 37500) course, and a second equity portfolio managed by the Core Trading Consultants student club. Made possible by generous alumni donations, it is overseen by the School of Business Investment Advisory Board.

Academic Objective: To expose students to the real world of investing — fundamental security research, portfolio analysis, and portfolio management — and to develop and refine students' skill set in analyzing the performance of companies, evaluating the broader stock and bond markets, making portfolio-driven investment decisions, and understanding the financial risks involved in those decisions.

Portfolio Objective: To deliver superior risk-adjusted returns relative to the benchmark over the long term by using rigorous fundamental analysis to identify and own high-quality companies; and to help fund a sustainable annual withdrawal rate of about 4% for the Ithaca College Investment Track Scholarship.

"Real capital. Real research. Real consequences. There is no simulation that replaces the weight of a live investment decision."

EA
Equity Fund
EPM/Equity Analysis Class

The Equity Fund is managed through the Equity Portfolio Management (EPM) and Equity Analysis classes. Students serve as equity analysts, assigned individual companies to cover every major GICS sector.

Each student analyst builds a complete equity research report including a multi-year financial model, discounted cash flow valuation, relative company analysis, and presents it through a formal investment thesis. Findings are presented to Ithaca College alumni and Investment Advisory Board (IAB) members in an investment committee setting. Research is evaluated and discussed before positions are voted on as a class.

The fund holds a long-only, diversified portfolio benchmarked to the S&P 500 Index. Position sizing, portfolio construction, and risk management are core curriculum components.

Fixed Income Fund
Fixed Income Class

The Fixed Income Fund is managed through the Fixed Income Analysis course, where students develop expertise in one of finance's most technically demanding asset classes. Students study several debt instruments including U.S. Treasuries, Corporate Bonds, Securitized (MBS), Emerging Market, Inflation Protected, and Municipal Securities.

Core topics include yield curve analysis, duration and convexity, credit risk assessment, and portfolio immunization strategies. Students actively monitor macroeconomic indicators, particularly Federal Reserve Policy, inflation data, and credit spread dynamics to inform portfolio positioning decisions.

The fund manages a diversified bond portfolio with an emphasis on capital preservation and income generation, benchmarked to the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index.

CTC · Student Organization

Core Trading Consultants (CTC) is Ithaca College's premier student-run trading organization and one of the School of Business's most active student clubs. Unlike the course-based funds, CTC operates as a competitive, application-based organization open to students across all years and majors.

CTC members integrate coursework with real-world experience to execute active, stock trading strategies. The organization runs a live portfolio, hosts weekly market discussions, teaches finance and networking topics to members, and organizes speaker events with industry professionals. The CTCs are a valuable asset to the School of Business in providing new opportunities for the club's members to expand their financial knowledge, experience, and confidence. By joining this organization, members build relationships with fellow students, professors, and the club's close-knit alumni network.

Members develop expertise in company research, macro analysis, risk management, and other skills that directly translate to finance and business careers. CTC also competes in national stock pitch and portfolio competitions.
